Free Things to Do with a Toddler in New York City

Most New Yorkers tend to steer clear of Midtown Manhattan's major tourist attractions, but when you have an amazing aunt who promises her nephew a day in the city, you make an exception! While I’ve navigated the bustling streets of Rockefeller Plaza and Times Square dozens of times, this was my first time tackling them with my three-year-old son in tow. Even though our home base was across the river in Astoria, Queens, my pint-sized explorer was absolutely thrilled to take the subway into "New Ork" to hit up the LEGO Store and a few other toddler-approved spots.
If you are heading to the Big Apple on a budget, here are a few free things to do with a toddler in New York City:
1. Have a Picnic in Rockefeller Plaza
We grabbed coffee and breakfast from Black Seed Bagels ($2 each) and found a beautiful "picnic spot" right in Rockefeller Center, where the famous ice rink sits during the winter. Of course, you can easily pack your own goodies and snacks from home to keep it completely free! On a sunny morning, the plaza is a surprisingly relaxed, pedestrian-friendly space where little ones can eat safely before a big day of exploring.
2. Build at the The LEGO Store on Fifth Avenue
My little guy is wild for LEGOs, so he was thrilled to visit the two-story epicenter of bricks on Fifth Avenue! Both levels feature interactive play tables where your little one can build to their heart's content. Best of all? No purchase is required to join in on the fun.
3. Explore FAO Schwarz (The "Toy Museum")
Yes, your toddler can actually have fun here without you spending a dime. FAO Schwarz is packed with interactive toy demonstrations, from remote-controlled cars to floating orbs, plus a fantastic Brio train table that’s perfect for toddlers. Be warned: it is noisy and overstimulating for adults, but your kid will be in heaven.
Parent hack: My sister and I told my son it was a "Toy Museum" (sorry, my guy!) so he could admire everything without bringing anything home. Between the massive piano and the life-sized plush animals, the displays alone are worth the visit. It's a miracle we walked out without pulling out our wallets!
4. Check out the FDNY Fire Zone
Located right in Rockefeller Center, this was by far our favorite experience! A huge thank you to Firefighter Frank, who gave us a fun, educational overview of the New York City Fire Department. Frank has proudly served the city for 27 years and plans to retire at the end of this year. My son loved climbing into the mock fire truck and getting his hands on the equipment. It’s completely free to enter and explore, though there is a great gift shop if you decide you do want a souvenir.
5. Take in the Sights of Times Square
Yes, it’s chaotic. Yes, it’s crowded. But your kid will be completely mesmerized. Between the massive glowing billboards, loud music, colorful vendors, and larger-than-life characters (we even saw a gigantic hot dog!), it's a feast for the senses. Just keep a firm grip on little hands and remember the golden rule of Times Square: don't accept anything handed to you by a stranger.
Pro-Tips for Surviving Midtown with a Toddler:
AirTag Your Kids: We tucked an Apple AirTag into a silicone Mickey bracelet for my son to wear. While you should never be more than an arm's length from your child in NYC, this added a much-needed layer of peace of mind in heavily crowded areas.
Just Say No: If someone on the street tries to hand you a "free" CD, bracelet, or trinket, just keep walking. They will almost certainly demand a "donation" for whatever they just handed you.
Sneakers: Don't Carrie Bradshaw this trip. Definitely opt for comfort. And you can easily chase after your little person, if needed!
This is by no means an exhaustive list of the free things to do with a toddler in NYC, but it made for a perfect Midtown morning. I can't wait for our next adventure in "New Ork"!
