My Lava Experience in Reykjavík, Iceland

Updated: 6 days ago

Reykjavik is a city of incredible contrasts – vibrant culture set against a backdrop of raw, untamed nature. My husband, Josh, and I recently found ourselves in this fascinating capital for a work trip, and amidst the hustle, we carved out time for a date night experience that genuinely took my breath away: The Lava Show.

The Lava Show takes place in the most unlikely of places - a business office park at Fiskislóð 73.

If you've ever dreamt of witnessing the mesmerizing power of a volcanic eruption up close – safely, of course – then this show is an absolute must-do. Imagine seeing real, molten lava, heated to a scorching 1100°C (2000°F), poured right in front of you. It’s not just a visual spectacle; it's an immersive dive into the geological heart of Iceland. It's the only show of its kind in the world and was developed by Júliús and Ragnhidur, an Icelandic couple who wanted to bring their love of lava to the world. They witnessed epic lavafall during the Fimmvörðuháls eruption in South Iceland and were inspired to try and recreate that experience for a live audience.

Excited for our Lava Show experience to begin! Take a photo in front of the basalt columns in the lobby. You'll learn more about these rocks during the show! They reminded me of The Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland.

Since this was a very special date night, we splurged on the Premium Experience (~$100 USD per person), and let me tell you, it was absolutely worth every penny. From the moment we stepped into the intimate upstairs lobby, we were greeted with a complimentary beverage and the chance to browse books about volcanic eruptions throughout Iceland. I almost ordered a hot coffee, but given the temperature of the show, I am grateful I selected a Coke Zero on ice!

Once inside the dimly lit theatre, the anticipation was palpable. The premium ticket granted us fantastic balcony seating, which made all the difference. We were allowed to stand during the show and we could actually feel the intense heat radiating from the flowing lava – a sensation that photographs simply can't capture. It was surprisingly warm, almost like standing next to a roaring bonfire, but with the added thrill of crackling liquid rock. It was like listening to a giant bowl of Rice Krispies!

Whoa! The Lava Show has begun!

Watching the lava slowly glide down the iron pipe was completely breathtaking! The room immediately became hotter.

The show itself is a masterful blend of education and pure awe. Our guide Samantha was incredibly knowledgeable, explaining the science behind volcanic eruptions in an engaging way, and sharing captivating stories of Iceland's fiery history. You learn about the unique properties of different lava types and witness how they cool and solidify right before your eyes. Seeing the molten rock glow, flow, and then harden into new, jagged formations was utterly mesmerizing. It’s not just a show; it’s a living, breathing geology lesson that sparks wonder. Josh and I were completely captivated. There were moments when we were silent, just taking in the raw power and beauty of it all, and other times we were whispering in amazement at the incredible process unfolding just steps away. It truly was the highlight of our free time in Reykjavik.

The Lava Show's custom furnace uses methane from the local garbage facility to get the lava rock hot, hot, hot for every show!

After the show, we got to see the custom furnace which brings the lava rock back to life show after show. The lava handler, Neal was back there cleaning up from our show and getting ready for the next! I felt uneasy being in such close proximity to such a mega oven, but it was a truly once in a lifetime experience. I even tried on the "Lava Suit" that Neal wears and surprised Josh when he got out of the bathroom. We also got to bring home a real piece of cooled lava from a previous show.

I put on this lava suit and waited outside The Lava Show's restrooms for 10 minutes to surprise Josh. Yes, it was worth it.

We highly, highly recommend the Lava Show, and especially the Premium Experience. It offers a unique window into Iceland's volcanic soul that you simply won't find anywhere else. If you're heading to Reykjavik – whether for work or leisure – make sure to carve out time for this extraordinary and unforgettable experience. You won't regret feeling the heat!
