Becoming a mom is the greatest (and toughest) thing I've ever done. But ya know what? I've experienced our city of Santa Monica in fresh ways that just wouldn't have happened before my son was born. I've always been an active person, so it's been important to stay involved with fun activities in my neighborhood. Early on in my motherhood journey, it became my quest to find fun (and free!) activities for my son and I to enjoy together.

Staying in the loop about local events can feel like another task on an already overflowing to-do list. But fear not, fellow Santa Monica mommas! Our vibrant city is brimming with resources and happenings tailored for families with young children. You just need to know where to look! I’ve been navigating this wonderful chaos myself, and I’m excited to share some of my favorite ways to stay informed about all the amazing events our community has to offer.

Here are a few of my favorite resources for discovering local events:
The Santa Monica Public Library: Our local library system is a treasure trove, and not just for books! Their email newsletters are fantastic for discovering a wide range of programs for children of all ages. Think story times, sing-alongs, craft workshops, and even special family events. These are always free and provide a wonderful opportunity for your little one to learn and socialize. Keep an eye out for seasonal programs and holiday-themed activities too! For example, I recently saw they had a fantastic puppet show and a bilingual story hour.
Mommy Poppins (Los Angeles Edition): This website and their accompanying newsletters are an absolute lifesaver for parents in the greater Los Angeles area, including Santa Monica. They curate an extensive list of kid-friendly events, from museum visits and outdoor adventures to classes and workshops. Their content is always up-to-date and often includes helpful details like age recommendations, costs, and insider tips. I've discovered some truly hidden gems through their recommendations!
The Santa Monica Pier: Our iconic pier isn't just for tourists! Their email list often highlights family-friendly events happening right on the water. This can include live music, special performances, holiday celebrations, and even kid-centric festivals. Imagine the joy of a carousel ride followed by a fun activity with an ocean view! They often have free events, making it a budget-friendly option for family fun.
The Montana Avenue Merchants Association: While primarily focused on the local businesses along Montana Avenue, their newsletters sometimes feature family-oriented events hosted by local shops and restaurants. Think special kids' menus, family fun days, or even seasonal events with activities for children. We love their annual Art Walk, Holiday Walk and Wellness Fairs! It's a great way to support local businesses while enjoying some family time in a charming neighborhood setting.
Fit4Mom Santa Monica: Every new mom needs to enroll in Fit4Mom! This program got me out of the house and on the move after many sleepless nights. For moms looking to combine fitness with community, Fit4Mom is a fantastic resource. Their email newsletters from owner Johanna not only provide information about their stroller-based workout classes but also often highlight playdates, social gatherings for moms and kids, and other family-friendly activities in the area. There are even a few classes down by the beach. It’s a great way to connect with other moms while staying active. For instance, they regularly organize park playdates after their classes! I've met some of my best momma friends here and although there are some free events, the membership is worth every penny.

The Santa Monica Daily Press: Yup, I still pick up a paper newspaper from time to time! It's old school, but it works. There's a solid calendar of events, which always has an event or two for families.

The City of Santa Monica: There are so many activities happening in every corner of the city and the "official"city emails are actually super fun and informative! I've discovered so many great events through their monthly newsletter, including a free monthly pancake breakfast, free pickling event and free concerts for little ones!

Skirball Cultural Center: Before becoming a Mom I'd never even heard of this spectacular mountainside museum, but now it's one of my go-to activities! This cultural center is a beautiful meeting place and educational center rooted in the Jewish belief of "welcoming the outsider." My son and I love coming to their epic Noah's Ark exhibit, storytime events, and even got to experience their annual Hanukkah Festival of Lights. Highly recommend purchasing an annual membership here!

Vintage Church: It's been truly a lifesaver to be rooted in our church community during this new season of motherhood. There's a weekly community group for moms called The Nest where you can truly come as you are, learn about how to be an intentional parent, share your challenges, celebrate your victories and be the momma you're called to be. There's childcare during services on Sunday, as well as many family-focused events during the holiday season!

Buy Local Santa Monica: I love buying things in the neighborhood whenever I can, so this is a pretty cool initiative to encourage supporting local businesses. I've learned about lots of family-friendly events in their email newsletters, including a free wellness event at Santa Monica Pier and an art festival on the Third Street Promenade

No matter where you are on your motherhood journey, know that you're not alone! While email newsletters like these are incredibly convenient, don't be shy about introducing yourself to other moms. Especially in the early days when, if you're like me, you're feeling overwhelmed and under-socialized. Don't underestimate the power of connecting with other moms who are all asking ourselves the same question..."what should we do tomorrow?" Chat with parents at the park, during playdates, at the library, etc. They often have the inside scoop on upcoming events!

Additional Tips for Moms Attending Local Events:
* Plan Ahead: Check event details for age appropriateness, stroller accessibility, and parking information.
* Pack Smart: Essentials like diapers, wipes, snacks, water, sunscreen, and a change of clothes are always a good idea. I love to pack extra snacks/pouches so we can share!
* Embrace the Chaos: Things don't always go according to plan with babies, toddlers and kids. For example, my son has NEVER sat still for an entire storytime at the library. But that's 100% okay with me! As long as we're trying new things. Be flexible and focus on enjoying the present moment.
* Share Your Discoveries! If you find a great event, spread the word to other moms in our community.

Navigating parenthood in these early years is a huge adjustment, but I promise that it can still be fun. Now that you're a Mom? We make the magic :)
Sleepless nights during the newborn phase are really hard, but discovering fun things to do with your little one in Santa Monica should be part of the joy! By tapping into these resources (and finding some amazing mommas and bebes to share them with), you can stay informed and create lasting memories with your family right here in our wonderful city.
